Some time in 2007,  Microsoft Vista, a new operating system to replace Windows XP,  will start shipping on computers. Until that time, there's nothing new in computer technology, so prices have never been lower. This is especially true for laptops. As prices get better and better, maybe its time you simplified your work space with a sleek, shiny, new model.

A laptop is like a new leather wallet. You have to love the look & feel of it. Choose a model with a screen size and keyboard that match your personal preference. Beyond that, consider the unit weight and battery life if you'll be working untethered. Most have built-in wi-fi capability. Don't cut corners when it comes to a warranty. An extended warranty is always a good idea for a laptop. Over time, they do take a beating, and small parts can overheat and are more difficult to repair. With a laptop, a three year extended warranty is a good investment.

If weight is not an issue, a laptop will be listed as a "Desktop replacement," meaning you would not want to lug it to a meeting, and that it has ample ports and connectors for peripherals. Also, older laptops won't be capable of meeting the needs of Microsoft Vista next year. A laptop that is "Vista-capable" will have a dual-core processor and extra memory to handle Vista's requirements, and will cost more.
